Scout the Appalachian Trail in Bland County

Description

   Drive about 50 miles to near Bland, Virginia and shuttle vehicles to trailheads. Walk the Appalachian Trail southward from Rt. 611 for 8 miles to Rt. 612. The Trail is mostly ridge walking with moderate changes in elevation. Clear the pathway of encroaching vegetation, scout for future trail maintenance and check the Helvey’s Mill Shelter. We will carry personal items, loppers, swing blade brush cutter, pruning saw and a 3 lb. hand axe. If only one vehicle is available, we will walk 2 miles from Rt. 612 to Helvey’s Mill Shelter and return.
Some work gloves are available. Tools are furnished.
Attendance can increase if vehicles are available.

   The Trail is mostly ridge walking with moderate 500 feet change in elevation. You will carry personal items and hand tools.


What You Should Bring

   Dress appropriately for changing weather conditions. Bring at least 1 liter of water, lunch, sturdy closed toe footwear and work gloves.
Bring loppers and pruning saws if you have them.
