About
Virginia Tech's location in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia
makes an ideal playground for all things outdoors. With the
Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway to the west and east
respectively, the opportunities for hiking, biking, boating,
skiing, sailing, and wide range of other activities are available.
The Outdoor Club at Virginia Tech takes full advantage of these
opportunities.
While primarily students, the club is open to community members. In
addition, due the wide variety of interest within the club, there
is opportunity for novices in sports to learn new skills or improve
existing ones.
Beyond recreation, the clubs second main focus is the maintenance
of a 40-mile section of the Appalachian Trail (we are one of only
two student organizations in the nation that do). What looks like a
lot of work, is actually great fun. The satisfaction of giving back
to the trail we all love is a common bond within the club.
In recent trips the club has climbed Mt. Washington, kayaked the
Florida Keys, day hiked off the Blue Ridge Parkway, got muddy
caving, and conducted countless hours of Appalachian Trail
maintenance. Check out our calendar to see where our next adventure
is going.

Laura Geise Head Trip Leader and Head of Women's Affairs
Recently transplanted from Oregon, the land of trees, mountains, and other things green, Laura is a graduate student in the Food Science Department. Due to the ridiculous amount of research required for her degree she put herself on a ten-year plan and decided to be a trip leader to pass the time. Although new to the club and Blacksburg, she tries to come up with fun new trips for the club, even if sometimes that means brown baggin it on the drill field. |

Public Relations - Travis Church ( )
Travis has been backpacking for over a decade. Hailing from Powhatan, VA Travis did his undergrad @VT in MSE and is currently a polymer engineering PhD candidate. Travis tends to lead day hikes, backpacking trips, and completely random trips. When he isn’t in the outdoors or in the lab, he is out photographing for various magazines and just for fun. He views his best feat of the outdoors as convincing Brian to take over as president of the OCVT.

Treasurer - Thomas Vance ( )
Thomas, hailing from Richmond, VA, is a senior in geology and
will be new to leading trips this fall. Word has it that he
is working on a joint whitewater rafting trip with the VT
Whitewater club on the Gauley. He is a trusted friend
who got “suckered” into the treasurer job.

Trip Leader and Web: Spencer Riddile ( )
When not GISing intensely for the Forestry department here at
Virginia Tech, or working on his graduate degree in
Geography, Spencer spends his time doing a large variety of
sports in the outdoors. Originally from Solomons, MD, Spencer
is our “mature” member of the club who spent a few years in
the corporate world but realized college was way cooler.

Trip Leader Extraordinaire: Mike Cutlip
Mike relocated to the Blacksburg area after spending 27 years in Ocean City, Md. He just received his accounting degree and will soon attempt a second degree in writing. Mike was a Venture Out trip leader for four years and this is his sixth year hanging out with the OCVT crew. He works full time for the Research Division at VT and works part time at The Weight Club to fund his excessively expensive hobbies. When Mike is not working, he enjoys most sports that involve land, air, and water. Specifically scuba diving, coastal paddling, backpacking, and some hang gliding.

Trip Leader: Nimal Lobo
A professional student now, Nimal uses the outdoor club as his latest excuse to delay graduation. He has been here for almost 10 years and is an engineer. Someday he wants to hike the AT. He has no idea how to identify any sort of plant on the trail. So if you want avoid poison ivy, ask someone else. He will be more familiar with nature after watching a few seasons of survivorman & man vs. wild. When it comes to tennis, he will kick your derriere.

The Dude - Jerry Austin
Jerry Austin might currently hold the record for the longest term
member of the Outdoor Club at Virginia Tech and is an invaluable resource. Jerry is known as our
go-to-guy for anything we need to know about trail maintenance
including training, what needs to be done, and how to do it. Jerry is
also an excellent story teller. You'll rarely see him in Blacksburg
as he is retired and lives 30 minutes west of us. He'll always meet
you at the trail head ready for a day of work.
